Job Description:

SpaceX is currently seeking talented individuals for a position on the Dragon Ground Operations team. You will have the opportunity to utilize your knowledge, experience, and creativity to design, build, operate, and maintain the fluid systems required to support Dragon spacecraft during pre-launch, launch and recovery operations. Our team is responsible for numerous fluid systems including those providing hypergolic propellants, high-pressure helium, life support, and for Dragon Crew and Cargo spacecraft.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Interact with vendors and resolve technical issues
  • Coordinate with vehicle engineers to design and develop fluid systems to support vehicle processing
  • Provide innovative solutions to problems while working with minimal supervision
  • Lead hazardous operations including work on high pressure systems, and work with hazardous hypergolic propellants
  • Write procedures for system activation and maintenance
  • Assist technicians with system maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Work with, and direct, skilled technician workforce to carry out maintenance activities
  • Maintain operational readiness of all fluid systems supporting Dragon spacecraft ground operations
  • Own and perform all activation testing with a small team of engineers and technicians
  • Work ‘on console’ to remotely control fluids operations
  • Complete design and drafting of schematics (piping and instrumentation diagrams)
  • Select components, such as valves, pumps, piping, tanks, and filters, and provide detailed specifications for their purchase

Job Requirements:

  • 50 hour work week is typical, and may vary depending on site operational needs, flexibility is required
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
  • Must be willing to travel to other SpaceX locations as necessary
  • Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems (such as PLC)
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design, build, and operation of pressurized fluid systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication, especially translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences

Qualification & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Hands-on experience working with complex fluid or mechanical systems in a professional setting
  • General hands-on mechanical experience: automotive, robotics, rocketry, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of experience within the last 5 years with fluid systems, hydraulics and/or HVAC systems
  • Experience with fluid systems engineering, assembly, operation or test
